Every padel player remembers the first time they saw a good bandeja.
It is a high overhead shot played with a flat, sliced action that sends the ball down the glass wall on the opponent's side, leaving it almost unreturnable. When played correctly, it is controlled, efficient, and maddening to play against. It looks deceptively effortless, which is probably why so many players immediately try to add it to their game before they are anywhere near ready.
The word is Spanish, roughly translating to "tray," which refers to the flat, horizontal swing plane. Unlike a smash, which generates power downward, the bandeja generates controlled spin and direction. The goal is not to win the point outright. It is to maintain net position and put pressure on the opponents without overhitting.
This is the part new players find hardest to accept.
The bandeja is a control shot, not a power shot. If you are trying to ace your opponent with it, you are using it wrong. The correct aim is to keep the rally, hold your position at the net, and set up the next opportunity.
The technique involves a continental grip, a swing that arrives from high and travels across the body, and a body position that stays slightly turned rather than squared to the net. None of this comes naturally to anyone who has played tennis or badminton, where the overhead is typically a flat hit with a different grip.
Most players take three to six months to produce a reliable bandeja under match conditions. It feels awkward, the ball does not go where you intended, and you will almost certainly overthink the grip every time. This is normal.
The moment it starts working, however, it becomes the shot you want to play whenever you get a lob. This is also normal, and slightly problematic, because sometimes a simple smash is the right answer and the bandeja is the clever-looking answer you choose instead.
